Trolley assistance
Posted by traindaddy1 on Friday, July 7, 2017 4:07 PM

Would like to add a trolley run to the (O27 - Plasticville - Postwar) layout.

On a limited budget, I've been looking for a good used one but I've seen so many different ones.

Need your expertise and advice.....

What should I be looking for in the pictures and descriptions?

Also, would you suggest that I just "bite the bullet" and purchase a new one?

As always, many thanks.

Best advice I can give is buy the best you can afford, it's hard to go wrong that way.

I've got three myself, an Atlas Industrial Rail Public Service of New Jersey trolley (came with a set now out of production), an MTH NJ Transit PCC, and a limited run Virginia Train Collectors trolley made by Bowser.  The Atlas set I got new at $150 about ten years ago, the MTH PCC for $75, used, at a train show four years ago, and the Bowser at $80 a few months back.  At the prices charged I thought they were too good to pass up.  All good and fun to run, and a trolley does add a nice bit of extra action on a layout.

If you're trying to stick with the postwar look you can't go wrong with a good old Lionel bump and go trolley or it's predecessor the General Models version.  If you're not a stickler for the theme, there are a lot of fantastic models on the market not to mention detail parts to dress them up a bit closer to what once ran in your own home town.

Trains, trains, wonderful trains.  The more you get, the more you toot!  Big Smile
