A short time ago I do remember (almost certain it was on this forum) reading a mention about putting a switch on an accessory like a crossing gate so that a youngster could operate it manually.
If you know, what type of switch should I consider?
Also, what would you suggest as smallest gauge wire for the hook-up?
As always, many thanks.
any type of momentary push button controller would work fine. Just out of what I use everywhere on the layout, I use 14 gauge

You probably could use as small as 18 but it's just what I use.
14 gauge wire is probably overkill, for accessories you could pick up a spool of doorbell wire 22 gage and that would work fine.
