Rebuilding and repainting an AF 350
Posted by USMCtrainman on Thursday, February 2, 2017 5:22 PM

I am rebuilding and repainting a Flyer 350 bullet nose.  The tender shell has been removed so many times that the small metal tabs are all but gone.  For the past several weeks I have been thinking of a good way to repair the shell from making new tabs out of sheet brass to making an "L" bracket connection that is glued to the shell and bolted to the tender deck to making a Velcro attachment. Does anyone out there have any other ideas?  Many thanks!

Mike

There seems to be a myriad of parts for the 350 on ebay.  Perhaps you wouldn't need to fabricate.

As for repainting, are you going with the traditional AF Royal Blue hue, or might you consider painting one in the actual Baltimore & Ohio Royal Blue scheme...?

If anyone out there has done this, would like to see.

fife,  you are correct.  I see a lot of parts out there, but one of my favorite parts of the hobby is the challenge of trying to make the odd repairs.  I have several nice pieces in my collection that are in excellent shape and all original, so when I find a piece that needs work I tend to want to at least take a crack at It. If I fail, it's no big deal. Just last night I decided to cut the brass strips to make my own tabs. I removed what little of the original tabs were left and soldered on 1" long brass strips the same thickness and width as the slots in the tender deck and it works great!  It slips in easy and instead of twisting the tabs like the original I just bend them outward slightly and they hold very well. As far as the paint, it's a tad light, but I went with Testors gloss blue. When everything is complete, I'll post pictures so you can see.
