Hello everyone!
Just joined, despite being a magazine subscriber for several years. My twin little boys and I entered the hobby 5 years ago. In that time, we've started building a 33 x 16 O scale (3-rail) layout. It was our first such undertaking and it's been very slow-going. We leanred a lot but it's been a snail's pace. We're actually about to dismantle and start a new smaller layout (approx. 16 x 19). Despite our time in the hobby, we are still very much novices as I have very little free time and we really enjoy just running the trains!

Welcome to the forum. something I learned a long time ago. the first thing to do once bench work is done is get it where some trains can run then you can go from there. Moving track around to how you like it, add scenery etc. Even if you just get some switching area in. I presently don't even have that but I'm looking at making a temporary n scale layout while I figure out what is the best move to moving forward. Come join us on the coffee pot.

Welcome aboard! We have a lot of fun here and sure do learn from one another.
I wish I had 16x19 to play with, but let me give you a little advice that works for me, get the trains up and running as soon as you can. Certainly, you can (and should) plan for scenicking and everything else that goes with it, but in my opinion the trains are the actors and the layout's the stage. Good actors can give a great performance on a bare stage, but the best staging and set design's useless without the actors.

Glad your kids are involved. When mine were young they spent a lot of time with our 8x12. I built it at dining table height so I could sit in a chair and they could easily reach with a kid stool or chair. Alas, when they went into late Jr high/high school, we took it down to convert the room into a TV/video gaming room for them and their friends.

Hold on to those trains Mr. McClellan! I suspect your kids may be back for them at some point in the future. Seems to work out that way, it sure did in my case. I was the kid that came back.
I don't think Roy is going to part with any of his trains considering what he did for a living.
