When did lionel start using the transformer used in the Glacier route set?

That transformer (6-12885) is their 40 watt transformer that has been around in one form or another for several years. It lists for $49.99 vs the $99.99 of the CW-80.

The 12885 transformer was introduced in the 1994 "Stocking Stuffer" catalog, same time as TMCC was being introduced. Prior to that the starter set transformer was 12849. The controller looked essentially the same on the older model, but the transformer's physical size was much smaller.
