Hi! I'm new to this forum.I recently picked up a red and silver Lionel rotary beacon at a yard sale marked as "464". The 464, however is linked to the postwar sawmill, whereas the beacon should have been labeled "494". Can anyone explain the descrepency? This beacon appears to be a later version, possibly from 1997. this version has the vibrating coil eith a black plastic beacon and shroud.

Beats me. I cannot find anything that matches 464 for a rotary beacon. A picture would help. Can you upload to a sharing service and share the link?
Is 464 stamped on the box or on the label attached to the base?
Does it actually say Lionel? There have been copies made by others.
I have never heard of a 464 Lionel rotary beacon.

SJ seems to be another who ask's a question then leaves it like that. no more info, no more anything to let others know. If he just been busy sorry but we get so many in here that ask a question then never responds back.
I'm having a problem uploading a picture of the beacon from Photobucket. When I paste the URL all I get is this blue box with a question mark.
Maybe Bob Keller's sticky on posting pictures will help (http://cs.trains.com/ctt/f/95/t/250136.aspx), or you can find it on this forum's head page.
open photo bucket goto your pic click on it to show you the links, use the one that says direct, come to CTT open a post look for the little picture frame click on it. it will open a box. post the link in there and hit post and your picture should show up
There is a 494 Rotary Beacon. The 494 has the vibrating coil. The previous 394 Rotary Beacon used the heat from the bulb to rotate the red/green Lens.

It's not a 494 beacon at all. The postwar Lionel 494 beacon was made between 1964 to 1966 and had a metal beacon head. You have a beacon that was made by Lionel LLC and has a five digit stock number. Lionel LLC often marks their products with Postwar Lionel stock numbers. I guess they made a mistake. I've noticed others.
