Running two trains on same fastrak
Posted by Chris T on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 5:29 PM

Hello

I have been working for many days trying to get tow trains to run on the same track fr my son. I have  13 x 20 layout with one loop dedicated to this operation. Im using lionel fastrak with either ZW or Lionel 80W tranformer. I have been using the wiring diagram from Classic Toy Trains "Wiring Your Toy Train Layout" page 93 (Automatic train control). After at least 48 hours of trial and error I decided to all in an electrician to follow the instructions with me  (cost me a case of bud light without results). I have at least 1 DPDT relay from every electric supply store in the greater Little Rock metro area.

We still cant get the operation to execute correctly. As we followed the instructions we continually got lost at step 6 of the procedure:

6. Connect the coil of the relay to a fixed or variable post providing 12-14 volts (blue wire) and also o the insulated outside rail (green wire).

We ran multiple variations of this with no impact.

Currently the first train runs through the first isolated block with the middle rail isolated (Block A). It stops once it reaches the second isolated block with the insolated outide rail (Block B). The second train runs the length of the loop going straight through block A without tripping the relay to power block B. It runs into the back end of train one.

I would appreciate any help you might have. Thank/Chris T

Chris: The October 2007 Classic Toy Trains has one of my articles which shows how to run two trains on the same track loop at the same time.
