Pulled out my old MPC set from 1973.
I was surprised when i saw they put a fixed knuckle coupler on one end of each car and a working knuckle coupler on the opposite end. I guess it was done to save money figuring you would manually put them on the track dummy end to working end and be able to still uncouple cars while saving them a buck or two. .
The original Lionel Corp made rolling stock with one fixed and one operating couple too. They also made cars with both couples fixed. Some locomotives had non-operating couples.
Yep fixed couplers was nothing new by the 70s. However one of MPCs greatest new features was needle point axles. Another new feature was the Mighty Sound of Steam, just static but sound just the same.

MPC was largely working with postwar stock for the first several years of their ownership of the brand.
