Need Info on 1946 Passenger Train Set

Hey Ya'll


There is a Postwar set from 1946 that I am looking for.

It consist of:
1. Streamlined Dreyfuss 2-6-4 Locomtove
2. 2 Blue and Silver sheet metal heaveyweights
3. 1 Blue and Silver sheet metal heaveyweight observation

I am not sure if it included track and a transformer.

What set number is it, was it produced after 1946, did it includ track and transformer, what is the outfit's number.

nick the set was #1400 or 1400w for 1946 I belive these were gray. 1947 it was 1432, 1432w first year black loco? both these sets came with the 2430,2430,2431.I run 1400w set all the time....tony

Just confirming what Tony said, the 1946 version of the 221 was gray, while the 1947 version was black (sources are Greenberg's Guide and TM Books CD).

BTW, The Greenberg's Guide indicated the 221 was for O-27 track only, because running over O-gauge switches could cause momentary power loss and trip the e-unit.

nick these show up on ebay from time to time. the gray one is sweet . very smooth runners no problems over the switches by locking the e-unit into forward.

retrofitting roller pickups will take care of the O switch tripping problem, did that modification to my dad's 1655, alway would trip out when the 3rd rail sliders tried to cross the switch. Cheers Mike

as the loco is going foward past you flip the e-unit switch to the other side,causing the engine to run only foward . sure you can retofit to rollers but my way is quicker....tony

Actually, Tony, you don't have to switch a Lionel e-unit on the fly. Just run in the direction that you want to lock it into, then stop and move the switch. E-units are what is called in the telephone-switching world "front acting". This means that they step when you energize the coil, so stopping has no effect on the drum position.

American Flyers, on the other hand, must be locked the way you described, on the fly, or, if stopped, in the state before the one you want. They are also front acting; but the "switch" is not a switch but rather a cam that lockes the armature mechanically into the operated position. So moving the "switch" handle while the locomotive is unpowered actually causes a step!

It is 12:53PM 12-8-04. I have found a set with coaches, black engine, and boxes on e-bay for $500.00. It is nice, but it is too rich for my blood.
