American Flyer #312 smoke in tender
Posted by irontooth on Monday, May 16, 2016 1:28 PM

Hello Everyone,

I have a question about AF smoke in tender units. I know that  AF made a bellows type SIT, did they also make a metal piston type?

Thanks

Gilbert did make a piston type Smoke in Tender unit. You can also purchase reproduction piston units to convert your bellows unit to a piston. I did convert one of my SIT locomotives to piston. Benefit is the tender motor works easier and quieter, but IMO the bellows make a better chuffing sound if they are not worn out.

the repro kits do not include the clip to hold the cylinder or the proper rod.

Interesting, the one I purchased had all of the components necessary to complete the job. Albeit that was a few years ago.
