O. Scale Lionel wind turbines

I purchased one of these and was disappointed in the amount of noise it makes. Does anybody know how to correct this and how to take it apart to try to solve the problem and to install a light on top. I understand a new release is now available , has anybody bought one, if so did Lionel correct the noise problem? Thanks

One of those is on my wish list so I too would like to know what you find out.

  I don't have one but wonder if it may be with the way you have it mounted to the table? Is is screwed down to the table wood and carrying the noise through the wood? If it is mount it to something to insulate it like cork board then glue that to the table. May help.

Or Maybe it is Lionel Realism, The real ones when you stand by them sound as if there is a jet flying by in the distance. We  have them by the thousands here in North Central IL.

Noise wise, probably wouldnt suprise me if it just needed some good old lubrication.

Mounted with screws, the noise is coming from the motor, sounds like the motor of the old erector sets ,a buzzing noise with gears moving. I contacted Lionel and they claimed it is normal that all their products make a lot of noise, and could not tell me if you could remove the shell and insulate or secure the motor better( lots of vibration ) and lube the gears. That is what I am trying to find out, if any one has ever tried to fix the problem. Thanks

I got these in the 3 pack when they first came out.  Mine is not silent but close to it.  A little bit of a hum is all I get.  Mine sits on 1.5 inch foam insulation which sits on 3/4 inch plywood.

[/quoteI visited with Lionel, they claim it is a toy, well my whole train setup is one big toy, they claim the new released wind turbine is the same they make noise, this is a hum , but not a slight hum,I have eight engines with sound and with all running ,you still hear the hum which is as load as all engines running. Lionel could not tell me a remedy ,and stated they all make a loud noise. Many different hobby stores stated the same and claimed grease would not work, and might try removing the shell and install insulation of some kind. So if you want one and can stand a constant humming, and keep in mind this was only one item, I can only think of the annoying hum with more than one, it will work for you. I am going to install insulation, not too much to cause heat problem, if that does not work ,I will sell this item on E-Bay. Thanks

To date you have never said how you have it mounted???? And that has been the question from me and others. That could be the whole thing. Unless I missed something, if so sorry. Screws carry noise into the whole table. If you have it where the noise can be held back and it makes noise I would like to know.

I have it mounted on 3/4 inch foam, 6"x6",sloped to look like mound, that is mounted on 3/4" plywood. I can hold the shell in my hand and apply pressure and it goes to a lower hum, it is motor viberating on the shell.I even tried to mount it on an old foam dock float 2'x4'x4 ' that I use to make back drops ,mountains etc. It did the same, Lionel said it was the motor and all made a loud humming or buzzing noise, like bees in a wall, and was not defective, and insulating the shell might work, but once I remove the shell voids warranty, and that these are toys. Hey ,if the noise does not bother you, then it will work fine, but when it interferes with $3200.00 of locomotive sound that bothers me. Another example ,put your cell phone on vibrating and place on the table and listen to it for thirty minutes, it drives you nuts, the sound is vibration between phone and table, but the irritation is the same.  Thanks

My first question to myself would be how long is Lionels warranty anyway I know it can't be that long. hate to say it but the only way I can see solving your problem is going to be opening it up and see if you can somehow issolate the vibration from the motor from the shell as somehow the motor must be vibrating against the shell. I do not own one and now doubt I will

The unit looks great, well made,easy to assemble,( just snap three blades in), but it is the noise.I have contacted five Hobby stores and Lionel, the hobby stores all state they have many complaints on noise. it just seems for $80.00 Lionel's new released model would be improved , it is not. They are the folks who recommend the insulation, and told me how to remove the shell, which is removing the blade assembly, by sliding it off the shaft, then removing two screws on the very front of the shell ,and removing the first half. I just hate to be the first to do so not knowing what to do after that. That is why I was hoping to find somebody who has tried it or who has even taken one apart to advise on any down falls. I have really no choice but to try to fix the problem, sell it , or after trying to fix it and do not screw it up and everything stays the same, sell it. It is just too much of a distraction. What little it has run, when folks come over , it is the first thing they see and love it, until they hear it, so it is just not me.

Motor was loose in the mount shaking and driving noise through the whole part..When I opened it up I put some foam next to the motor to stop the vibration and a small bead  of silicone where the motor lays in the cradle. Thankyou, Lionel has been around since I was a small kid,quality was always known . I feel they should strive again for that, maybe madee in USA. I know now that I am not alone,with other noise problems with other accessories ,that they have heard about, they would improve the line. Thankyou, Lionel has been around since I was a small kid,quality was always known . I feel they should strive again for that, maybe madee in USA. I know now that I am not alone,with other noise problems with other accessories ,that they have heard about, they would improve the line. Ok , folks,figured most of this out, first tape the front shell off, now use two flat screwdrivers and pry the front blade and hub off it will be the bushing in the front shell that comes off, the drive gear will stay on the shaft so the front shell and blade hub stay together, only have 3/4" of wiring to play with oh forgot the two screws you have to remove out of font shell, long shaft Philips screwdriver, grease the two guides that the front shell slides on, put it back together .Next take screw out of bottom of main post pull part and pack with cotton, put back together , now glue unit on 1/4" rubber foam,no screws, I used Goop.you now have a light hum

One other thing that I think would help, I did not do this for I already put the top unit together, you get vibration in the second half of the shell, once apart use a paint stir stick and cut to fit across the two sides and glue, this will really take the rest of what little noise is left and will only hear the motor which is nothing, the second shell act as an amplifier, it is hollow, by tying the two sides together ,it helps makes it more solid ,kinda like a tuning fork. Thanks

Sometime I think Lionel needs to hire folks like you to pr and make sugestions on how to correct so they can produce a better product and have better customer relations and acceptance before it even hits the market
