Marx Steamer 4 wheel motor exchange.
Posted by KRM on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 7:19 PM

Hi Marx guys,

Looking at most Marx 4 wheel steamer motors they all look pretty much the same. Changes are smoke unit or no smoke unit. Baldwin wheel or spoke wheels drive gears and front trucks.
My question is do most fit into the same mount so you could use a 1666 no smoke motor in a 999 or 391 so that engine would travel over Lionel switches???? Maybe only changing out the drive gears and front trucks???

Tks,

 Kev.

I know some of them are interchangable. I recently took an old motor that came out of a steam engine (it had side rods...) and installed it in a windup powered M10005. I did have to remove the side rods, and I had to replace the front mount (that the body screws into on the front sides of the engine), but it works nicely.

It seems most of the motors are the same; it's that front mount that varies from engine to engine. If all you are doing is looking to replace a single reduction motor to a double reduction type, I would think you could take the mount off the old motor and install it onto the new one. Just be careful not to break the tabs on the motor frame. I don't know how one would go about attaching a shell to a motor with those tabs broke off.

Hope this helps,

Hi,

Here is my finished hybrid Marx steamer. So to answer my own question,, yes you can!
I Used a Marx 1666 motor installed a Marx 391 e-unit and had to shorten the drive rods just a bit to make a 1940s Marx that will run over Lionel switches.  Works fine. Under $30.00 invested.
I am pulling a Lionel tender and cars but will look for some tinplate cars soon.
