Wiring diagram for a Marx 1998 diesel
Posted by KRM on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 3:36 PM

Hi,

Anyone know where I can find a wiring diagram for a Marx 1998 UP diesel??
And the reversing unit? Not sure if the one I am working on for my uncle is wired wrong or the e-unit is bad. The unit contacts just bounce up and down all of the time
Thanks,
 Kev.

There is an article somewhere on the site, i don't know where, that deals with the wiring schemes of old lionel engines.  the type c 2 position reverse wiring is the same as that in the marx engines that do have a reverse.  honestly, i'd just unwind the stationary field and rewind it with one coil, then replace the marx reversewith a lionel 3 position e unit.

Cleaning the motor and reverse unit is usually the place to start.

A clear picture of the motor and reverse unit would help those not familiar with Marx train design.

Okay Guys, After a closer look the motor and e-unit work fine. But there is this thing in there that I have no clue what it is or what it should do??? It just makes a lot of noise. What is it and what should it do. Looks to me I can just cut it out and this diesel will run fine. But I would like to know what it is. The unit whatever it is contacts just bounce up and down all of the time

Here is a picture.

How/where does it get mounted in the locomotive?

It seems that ''making a lot of noise'' is what the unit was designed to do. Some of the 1998 diesels came with a feature called 'Diesel Roar', which was an early sound producing mechanism.

Thanks Larry, I think you got it. The "diesel roar" indicated by the silver screw underneath the horn is on this unit. It mounts inside the engineer area of the cab. I guess I will ask my uncle if he wants me to cut the wire to it or leave it connected. It is far from sounding like a diesel roar.   Surprise
