I have two questions for everyone. 

How can you tell if your armature is starting to go?

 

How much space is too much or not enough? Talking about thrust washers on armature shaft.

spacing from the factory was usually 1 .020 shim. I shim them so there is .010 to 005 play on brush plate end (washers on the worm end). as for if it is going bad, if it runs very slow in 1 direction or the other that is usually a sign. also if you see a ring of fire and brush smearing on the communtater face that is a giveaway.

and per Af specs, most testing was done with no more then 2 amps pulling 4 frieght cars around a 180 in oval for steamers and 2.4 amps for dual motor diesels pulling the same or 4 passinger cars.
