Lionel Union Pacific 202 wiring help

Need speedy reply - Thanks.

Bought a 1957 Lionel Union Pacific 202 Diesel. All ran both forward and reverse - so I took pictures of the chassis but failed to get a good shot of all the wiring and now after reassembly I have it running great in reverse only....(#*&@$(^$#($$. Could anyone sketch out or describe the wiring between the e-switch, wheels and motor? Granddad is hoping to get this running for my son's family tree.

Here is the wiring diagram for your locomotive. It has the 2 position reverse unit, and is the diagram in the upper right corner. Make sure the insulating washer is installed properly for the solder lug that gets screwed through the brushplate, or the loco will only run in one position.

Make sure the E unit is turned on.  Otherwise it will not cycle

Since you took it apart anyway consider replacing the 2-pos e-unit with a 3 pos or electronic board with horn..

, I may have an old 3 pos e unit (this 2 pos unit seems  to be trying. When it attempts to go forward, the armature on the motor moves up vertically and locks - as though too much play. I dont have a ball bearing for the bottom of the armature and not sure if it is missing? would that be enough to give too much play in the armature?

You will have to take the armature out and see if you have the ball bearing, and also the 2 washers on top of the armature, to limit vertical movement of the armature.

Yes sir, runs fast in reverse only. It attempts to start forward - the armature rises some then locks ups. I think it may be more of a motor prob than a e-unot problem.

I dont remember seeing the ball bearing for the bottom of the armature but the top washers are in place. Where can I get a bottom ball bearing??

It runs fast in reverse. THe e unit does switch and the motor attempts to run forward - the armature rises in motor then locks up . Your ball bearing idea may be th eproblem. Where can I get one? The top two washers are in place.

Look at the diagram I posted above...

THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM:

Look at where this solder lug is screwed to the motor on your loco. It is supposed to have an insulating collar between it and the screw - part number 633-107:

This will solve your problem.

The ball bearing is part #600-110 available from Brasseur.

With the bearing and washers in place, there should be very little vertical movement of the armature when the loco reverses direction.
