I have an unopened Thomas the Tank Circus RTR Set that I would like to give to a grandchild. My question is, does this engine operate on AC? In other words, is it compatible with any other Lionel transformer?
.
The following link for Lionel RTR Thomas Trains references the use of a Power Max transformer and the Power Max transformer provides AC voltage (see pg 9 second link).

Swede,This is one of the early sets and has a transformer other than a CW-80.
cw-80 and powermax when you look quickly look the same but are not but anyway to answer you question yes it is ac

Ok, thank you.
This power pack looks nothing like a CW-80, looking more like a MPC product with the round throttle knob on the sloped front. I think I finally found a picture of one on ebay and I think it shows Output 18VAC, so it should be good.
If this is the older set with the two piece transformer (the power pack plugs into the wall, then connects to the controller using a 8mm jack) then, yes you can run the engine using a traditional Lionel transformer (ZW, KW, LW, RW, CW80, etc, etc, etc) or another manufacturer.

No, it appears to be controlled from the one piece powerpack knob.
That is still a ac transformer so any of the above transformers will work zw,vw,lw,type R, ect
Thank you. I just wanted to be sure. I didn't want too many disappointments on Christmas Day.
You might want to see it run on a 027 circle first Mine (an early version ) had problems on a o gauge loop
I believe this was corrected on later versions
