Replacement trucks, Lionel or ??

I recently read a post which refered to Liuonel replacement trucks. After a frustrating period trying to make sense of the Lionel web site parts search, I'm back to "Information Central"

What is the part # for Lionel replacement trucks (die casr) and or any other replacement truck that can be used tp standardize a bunch of dissimilar or broken units?[xx(][?]

If you can post a little more info. ( Do you need trucks for passenger cars, freight cars, or engines? What era are the items you need from?) The number on the item would be a big help. I can post the part #s for you with a little bit more info. Hope someone can help if I can't.

I did just notice in the Lionel 2004 volume 2 catalog, Lionel lists a pair of die-cast metal sprung trucks (6-14078), for freight cars, for $12.99 retail. Perhaps that would work?

MANY thanks for the offer of help. I can't post #s at this time as all are stored away during rebuild of table, etc. I have a mixed lot of PRE War units....passenger and freight of various types and eras. I was/am hopeing for some sort of generic, or universal truck/coupler. Any hope along those lines ? If not, I'll follow eariler suggestions to make up adapter cars. The Lionel die-cast sprung trucks will mount to almost any prewar, postwar, MPC, or modern era car with very little trouble.

I would be a little leary of replacing pre-war trucks with modern-era Lionel trucks. They would probably work fine, but one should consider the history. I think Lionel made conversion couplers or compatible couplers during the pre-war production. Back in the day, it seems Lionel built compatibillity into production, especially in O-gauge. early standard gauge had problems from year to year, but by the time pre-war O- gauge was introduced, retro-fitting was possible. With a little patience, and the item numbers can be positively identifed, I believe this forum can help. If the pre-war items were mine, I think I would post the numbers and all info. I had, and see what results I found. there are a couple months till Christmas, and let's see what happens before using modern Lionel trucks.

Installation of the die-cast trucks requires no permanant modification to the frame or body of the cars. Once the original trucks are removed, as long as they, along with the apropriate mounting hardware, are saved, they can very easily be re-installed. I would have no qualms about installing them if they allow you to enjoy your trains more.
