671 not run smooth
Posted by bossman on Sunday, June 1, 2014 7:49 PM

Just obtained a 1948 671. It does not run smoothly. It seems to be bound up and jerks when power is applied and then needs full power to run. I cleaned and did continuity on the armature. No shorts or opens. All is lubed. I can rotate the drivers in reverse, but not forward. With the motor removed the drivers and motor turn freely. I'm usually pretty good at fixing these Lionel engines. This one has me stumped. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Such problems are frequently related to the relay in the tender sticking and not allowing the proper reversing procedure.  You have to turn the power pack on and off a couple times to change direction, and some of them had a lever that would lock the relay and prevent reversal.
