Blacken wheels and rods on locomotive

How do you blacken the wheels and rods on a locomotive. I have a Lionel Copper Range locomotive and want to blacken or darken the bright silvery wheels and rods. Any help would be great.

Here is a widely used product to blacken metal.  A one step product, Blacken-It is here.

Some gun shops sell gun bluing kits. Beechwood Casey is one I used.

Some folks use Neolube. It is actually a dry lubricant that goes on wet. I think Micro Mark sells it. I use it as a dry lubricant from time to time.
