Atlas Steam Era Classics
Posted by Steve1964 on Monday, January 20, 2014 7:08 PM

Over the last couple of years, I have collected a fair amount of 1940's and 50's Lionel traditional sized locomotives and rolling stock. I was reluctant to mix in any bigger 6464 cars at first, but eventually did. I now find the smaller traditional sized pieces look great running along side of the larger 6464 pieces.

I have been looking at some Atlas O gauge Steam Era Classics box cars, and they really look great. They have a lot of detailing, and have a retro flair that I like. Does anyone here know how these cars would mix in with my mainly vintage Lionel fleet scale wise? I would love to have a piece in my collection, if it will fit.

Thanks for your comments and opinions!

I've gotten some of those Atlas Steam Era Classic cars and I throw 'em in with everything else.  They look great, so I don't sweat the relative scale all that much.

Actually, if you look at a real freight train you'll see the cars come in all sizes and don't "match" exactly anyway.

The only thing I'd watch out for is make sure it's got regular O gauge compatible couplers.  Some come with scale couplers that won't work with Lionels.

And if they're listening, I want to extend my hearfelt thanks to Atlas, MTH, Lionel, and others who are re-producing those gorgeous billboard cars from the early 20th Century.   Thanks guys!
