How to get started in TMCC

I have a 5 year old Lionel LInes steam starter set and am considering moving into TMCC. What do I need to get started? I know I need the CAB-1 Remote. Do I need the Command Base if I get the Powermaster 135? My set has the 40w transformer. Do i need more pwoer?

Your starter set loco is probably not command (TMCC) equipped but you can use the cab-1 remote and either a Lionel Powermaster or TPC to remotely control its functions. The 40w transformer will only be suitable for one locomotive on a very small layout so you may want to add a Lionel Powerhouse as a voltage source (it plugs into the Powermaster or TPC). Hopefully you have a local dealer who can help you make these purchases. If not, you can get them mail order on the net or by phone from Charles Ro, Island Trains, Train Express and many other dealers. The cheapest way to go is to get the cab-1/command base combo for about $100 or so (MSRP about $130) and a Powermaster (probably about $60-80, haven't checked recently). You don't need the command base for conventional TMCC control but this will enable you to add TMCC command equipped locos in the future and remote control them in command mode. When I wanted to learn about TMCC, I visited the train store and asked them to explain it to me starting at the wall receptacle for electricity and work towards the track. I finally caught on after seeing the actual pieces and parts in operation.

I should have thought of this long ago. Here is the link to Lionel's Quick Start book on TMCC in pdf format. Download and print it out for some interesting reading about TMCC. I did everything Lionel said to do in their instruction manuals especially which rail was hooked to what wire.
