New trouble with MPC

I'm on my second nylon gear problem within a week on an MPC era Lionel loco with as little run time as the other one. Seems that they are starting to reach that age where they just start to dry out & crack or slip their splines. Just wondering if anyone has a fix for this if they're going to be chronic, is there a metal gear that could be used instead? The first one was the external nylon drive gear on a F-3 truck & now it's the internal gear that meshes against the worm on the inside of a Trainmaster truck from the 80's. Also, it looks to me like I have to pull a wheel to get this thing out?

What type engine is this, (roadname) and cab number are helpful in getting repair information. Some of the plastic worm wheels have brass replacements. Do not know what type of truck you have, so cannot answer if the wheels need to come off. Repair inquiries need to be specific.

I believe that the worm gear is mounted on one of the drive axles. If that's the case, at least one wheel will need to be removed.

all the post war gears can be used as replacements for them damn plastic gears used by MPC.

Was lucky enough to find the metal gears locally for the Trainmaster. I am still looking for metal replacements for the F-3 gears though.
