I have a couple of Lionel steamers that when I went to change the light bulbs the railing retainers either broke or came out and fell away without notice. Is there a place that can repair these locomotives. Lionel states that they won't take repairs and there are no local shops where I live. I don't mind sending them away as I really like them and they are worth fixing.

Can't stop working on the railroad!
There are a few places listed in some of the magazines. I know of one in my area. traindoctor.com There are located in Saginaw,Mi
First, if it is just a railing retainer -- the circlip that holds the railing to the body, you may be able to get replacements. Try Jeff at The Train Tender. (www.ttender.com)
If you would like help on a reputable repair place, tell us an approximate area of where you live. There may be someone close by.
Finally, I assume we're talking about an older locomotive, because Lionel will take newer stuff for repair. If you tell us the locomotive, we can get a better idea of the problem to which you refer. HTH.
I don't know what you would consider newer but they are both made post 1995. One is a Polar Express like Berkshire and the other is a semi-scale Hudson. I called Lionel and they said they are not taking any repairs at all right now. I live in San Pedro California and I have check within 30 miles and their are a couple of authorized repair places but they won't do cosmetic repairs. I don't mind paying to send them away I just need to know where. They are very nice locomotives and run great.
Kev contact jeff at the train tender and see if he has the parts as it really isn't that hard to do yourself.
jeff@ttender.com or goto www.ttender.com and get his number and call him. He's very helpful but doesn't do repairs as he's busy enough just selling parts.

I checked these out but I see they come in different sizes and some are not available. Do you happen to know which ones I need?
I though these are small cotter-pins that you can find at the hardware store. Try typing Lionel railing into an ebay search.
I will have to do just that as Lionel or Jeff doesn't have them. I also need them for my Hudson so hopefully Lionel has those in stock. These will probably be my last Lionel steamers as they all seem to have the same problem. I have several high and low end Steamers from MTH nad have never encountered this problem.
I don't know what your missing so all I can do is tell you that the longer one's go to the front where the boiler is smaller. The one's that are not available you don't need unless you lost the one that slides over the rail. Also I don't know what hudson you have. You can look at this and decide. Item # 30
