Lionel armature source
Posted by KRM on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 11:21 AM

Hi,

Anyone know of a Lionel armature source? I need a 1055-118 for a ALCO 200 series 218. Is there some place that rewinds them or repairs them?

Tks,

 Kev.

Kev,

Just check ebay for another armature, or call Jeff Kane.  Having an armature rewound is expensive.

KEV, might be cheaper to take a chance on a junker

I think most of the "re-winders" weather it be model trains or 100HP 3 phase industrial motors are GONE.

once again, chalk one up to China

any more, doesnt seam to matter  what it is, its just cheaper to buy a new one......

You might try David Laughridge, Dr Tinker, of Lexington MA. (781) 862-5798. He might be able to do armature rewinding or have a motor in stock that would work.

The "motor doctor" in Ohio can do all that. He rewound 2 for me. Just google the motor doctor. He can fix anything.

Roger,

I contacted him and he can do it for $49.00 So I need to consider that. I wish I was sure that was the problem before I fork out 50 bucks. How do you test a armature?

You can buy an entire loco for that much on eBay.

Thank you Rob.

I tried using a multimeter set to 2k.  I get reading of .1 across two segments combinations and.002 on the third combination. No resistance between the center shaft and any of the three commutator segments.

 What do you think?

You have an open winding on one pole.

Yes I do Rob. I checked it against two other armatures I know to be good with the audible setting and they all beeped in all combinations. With this armature one combination is open.

I guess I will send it to the Doctor.Yes

 Thanks a lot.

Kev, before you send it try reheating the solder connections on the commutator. I fixed one that way once.

KEV - that is good news!

I still have the 218 A-A that  I received as a Chrismas present in 1959 or 60. Guess what? I had to replace the armature in it back around 1995.

Kev, and every one else.

TOY TRAINS are GREAT. and the help and friendships  on this Forum are Priceless.

It is absolutely fantastic, that so many people, most who have never met in person, and probably, never will, are so willing to divulge trade secrets and repair help as well as other tips on life in general .

I am glad to see you got it fixed

Ryan,

You are sooooo correct. What a great bunch of folks on here. Not only is it fun but I learn a lot to. Wink

Roy,

I still have my original 218 and 218C I got in 1961 when I was nine years old. It still runs strong but spends most of it's time on display in a ABBA configuration.  The one I fixed today runs locked in forward most of the time on my layout with a 202 chassis in a 8020 shell with a 8021 B unit as shown in the video clip. Yes

Thanks again everyone for the help!

Try BOB HANNON in Baltimore MD. I send him all my work, turn around time is around 10 days or so.
He's done over 3 dozen armaturea and 2 dz fields for me in the last 3 yrs. also if you sent him the armature or field pre-stripped of wire, he'll knock 5 bucks or so off his price. and sends every thing back well packed in a box. I feel he is much cheaper then anyone else i have dealt with in the last 20 yrs.
