help identifying steam loco tenders
Posted by uronw on Thursday, March 21, 2013 7:21 PM

Does anyone know if there is a resource to identify these tenders?

I mean a general sort of way to look at a tender and be able to know what you are looking at.

Here's an example; Lionel 237 postwar steam Scout 2-4-2 (nothing special) is listed with two different tenders.  I saw one of these on Ebay but the seller didn't say which tender it had, and I had no idea.

Any guidance to a resource or two would be Greatly appreciated.

One source to help you identify the right Loco-Tender combo would be to get the September 2001 CTT back issue.  It gives you a list of what Tender goes with a particular Loco depending on the year of manufacture.  An example is the one you used on a 237 Engine.  There are 5 combinations listed as follows:

237 & 1061T - 1963, 64, 65, 66

237 & 1062T - Same years of production

237 & 242T - 1965, 1966

237 & 1060T - 1963

237 & 234W - 1965, 1966, 1967

I printed out 4 pages titled "Lionel Postwar Engine~Tender Reference Guide" which at the time was provided by Toy Train Restoration Products, www.toytraintools.com , and originally written by John A. Grams.  I tried to see if I could find where I originally found the source, but can't get to it again.  I can only guess that this list is inside the September 2001 issue, so you may want to try to get that issue.

Your other source would be to obtain The Standard Catalog of Lionel Trains 1945-1969 by David Doyle, which is a good source of the Postwar Trains and describes all the variations.

Good Luck

i wouldn't put a slope back tender behind a Hudson, but you could always revert to my theory that, if it looks ok, how can it be wrong?  with the absence of any mainline Dorfan power, i routinely use a Lionel #258 locomotive which fits into the consist perfectly.

I agree with Jerry and thanks for sharing that list. The Standard Catalog of Lionel Train Sets is also good for double checking if there is no tender number for it has pictures to use as a reference.

Thank you all for your interest.
Here is a site that I found that I thought was quite informative and interesting.
It deals with all types of engines made by lionel.
For the steamers it lists the correcgt tender for each along with loads of other info,
so check it out if you have time:
