Problem with lionel 2023 master engine

I recently posted a forum on helping my son with his post war lionel train set, I was recently graciously given some curved o gauge track and as far as straight track I disassembled and cleaned and  polished the few straights we had. Ive rebuilt E-unit with new fingers, im still trying to find a pick up roller with good fingers I only need fingers but cant find just those, ebay gave me a few leads on whole pick up roller. I was curious about the rebuild I did on the e-unit so I applied voltage to the e-unit and it seemed to step every time I put voltage to it Im pretty sure thats how its supposed to function. I wanted to see if motor would operate with e-unit intacted so, keeping in mind I dont have pick up roller I attemptedto bench test engine, so I applied power to side of e-unit that would take power from pick up roller and negative side i touched to frame, i could see the unit stepped once and sounded energized, but motor did not respond at all, i was then curious about motor so i  bypassed engine from e-unit and wired blue and green from motor together, applied power to yellow side of motor armature, then touched negative side of voltage to motor, it responded and started operating truck i removed voltage when i could see motor starting to smoke, i also notice brushes was bouncing a little and wet oily sbstance surface from top of motor, im at my witts end, and i can tell my boy is starting to loose faith in me, any help would be great, Thank You, Father helping son!

I am a bit confused where you speak of pickup rollers with good fingers? Are you speaking of the rollers on the bottom of the truck, or are you referring to the E unit? If you need parts just call Jeff Kane. His number and info is at www.ttender.com. Your motor smoked because you tested it improperly. The method you used will not work. 

Where are you located? Maybe one of us can help you?You are welcome to send it here. Let me add one thing here, you need to look at the front power truck closely and see if any of the four wheels are dragging on the magnets that sit crossway's up top. This often happens with these models and will need to be fixed first.

Here is the wiring diagram for your locomotive. Make sure the motor is wired correctly. Note that the wire colors may not correspond to the diagram; if so follow the wiring diagram and disregard the colors. If your wiring corresponded to the colors on the diagram, then you wired it correctly to check the motor. Have you cleaned the commutator surface of the motor, the brushes and brushplate? If not, and there is oil on the commutator, it could be what you saw smoke. Make sure you disconnect all wires from the e-unit before you check the motor independently.

Here is a pictorial of the roller collector assembly. Which part is it that you are looking for? If you are looking for the assembly without the rollers, you may not find that.
