I recently purchased the MTH waving American flag and hooked it up to my platform. I had it connected to a lionel 1.8 AMP accessory transformer. I also had the MTH animated firehouse hooked up to it. It was working fine, but was very loud due to the vibration on the foam top of the platform. I gently prerssed down on the flag and there was a loud pop and smoke came out of it. I took the cover off the bottom of it, and there was a transistor or something (little round blue thing, I am not that good with electronics), and it was split open and all the packing was out of it. I am sure that I fried the thing, question is, does anybody know the true reason behind it? I am not sure if the wires touched underneath or there was another problem. Looking for advice on this, thanks....
Maybe it was a voltage spike? It could have been that or the circuit component could have just been bad. I wish you the best on getting it fixed and it shouldn't be to hard if your handy with a soldering iron.
That was a capacitor that popped. It's value will be listed on it's side.

Gabesdad, if you followed the installation instructions I'm sure the failure isn't you're fault. That's the trouble with electronics. They could last for 20 years or blow tomorrow, you never know.
I second Redfire's capacitor diagnosis, I've seen them go on other things, but not train accessories.
