Pre War American Flyer O Gauge Restoration HELP!!!!

Hi KIds,

Im new to the group and I hope I'm doing this right

I'm trying to restore some prewar Flyer O Atlantic locomotives and cars

One is a 417 (Dreyfus Hudson)?

Another is a 3310 3316 2-4-2 with bell

(2) 3308

I need wheels front and rear trucks

side rods

a nose for the 417-419

I hope to connect with other pre war buffs that can help with new or used parts

to the forum Dave.  Its always good to have another PreWar American Flyer enthusiast join us.  From the sound of it you have some very nice engines.  The parts that you are looking for are available.  I don't have my resources available at the moment but there are several dealers who have parts, and on occasion they also show up on ebay.

I hope you will post some photos of the engines that you are trying to identify and restore.  You might be able to find some photos of your equipment over on the PreWar thread.

Your #417 is one of my favorites.

I have this same model and am having trouble with the rear truck coming off the track.  I believe there is a part missing - possibly a spring.  Is there a manual I could reference to figure out what is missing - or possibly a picture would be helpful.

Welcome  to the forums.  Its good to have another person interested in Flyer on board.  I'm glad you were able to search out a thread that provided some information for you,even if it is 2 years old.

Unfortunately, I do not know of any diagrams of this specific engine or manuals that show the parts breakdown.  I am not at home at the moment, but when I get back home I will dig out my engine and photograph the trailing truck.  That might at least be a place to start.

They specialize in Lionel restoration parts, both pre and post-war, but you never know, they may have some American Flyer.

No luck so far. Can I get a picture of the rear truck? I seems there might be something missing between the center of the truck and bottom of the cab. I've emailed several parts sites and no help thus far. Is this model called something else besides the 417? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Here on my rear trucks.  The bracket, etc looks very new and doesn't appear to match what I've seen on the web.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That is a home made trailing truck. 

I would say keep it for now as it has a hook to couple to the tender.  I suspect the only way you will find one to replace it is off of a junker.  I do not believe that part is made as a reproduction part.

The correct trailing truck will look like this.  Not visible in the picture is a piece that does go up into the bottom of the cab, to hold the trailing truck in place when the engine is picked up.

Thanks for the help!  Very disappointing but I truly appreciate the information.  Can you get a picture of what the center piece looks like?  I'm hoping I can cobble something together so it will work.  It is such an awesome engine.
