MTH DCS setup
Posted by RRaddict on Sunday, September 16, 2012 2:02 AM

I purchased an older MTH TUI with hand held remote.  I tried setting it up VIA the owners manual. The manual is good but I think they left out a lot of things.  I couldn't getting to add an engine I am getting the error no engine found. I connected a 100 watt brick to the AUX power and the used the terminals out to the track but nothing. The remote knows the TUI is there as it sees it when I hit the read button. Does anyone have simple instructions for setting this up or know anywhere on the web to get the proper information.

I couldn't post a reply for some reason so I had to repost here.  I solved the problem with the tips here, if you are reading this for the first time and can't get your TUI to work take a read of the rplies on this post.  The TUI manual is nice size but doesn't tell you clearly how to set it up.

What are you using to power your track? If all you have is the one brick it needs to be connected to fix 1 in and the fix 1 out connected to the track. Should be able to add engine if track has power.

First off, are you SURE the TIU is functional?

You can connect the power brick to the Fixed Input 1 and the track to Fixed Output 1, and that's all the connections you need, the TIU will be powered from the Fixed Input 1..  If you connect power to the AUX and then just connect to the outputs, you are not providing any track power to the track, the aux only powers the TIU.  There MUST be power connected to the matching input terminals for you to get power to the output terminals.

After you get the power sorted out, it should be clear sailing, just configure from the owner's manual.  Basically, you need to add the engine to the remote, then started it up and run some trains.

If your DCS Locomotive has not been on the track for some time, it may be the problem.  I have had the "engine not on the track" or "no engine found" reply. That would indicate the TIU is OK and transmitting.

After the locomotive has sat on a powered track for 15 to 20 minutes, the battery will be charged and the engine should respond when you try "add an engine" and then "add a MTH engine".

Why the battery has to be charged to commuicate????

A lot of commuication problems have been solved with upgraded software for the TIU and Remote, free on-line from MTH Web Site.  (in upgrading you must do both the TIU & Remote software so they match)

You also need to do some specific configuration things to update your TIU.  Specifically, you need the four wire telephone handset cord between the two connections on the box before you power it up.

I recommend you spring for the $12.95 and buy the DCS O Gauge Companion - 2nd Edition E-Book, it'll answer many questions about DCS operation.
