Did anyone else notice the 2245 Texas Specials at the top? Or have those been there a while?
First thing I noticed when I signed on to the forum tonight.
I like them, but I'm a bit biased. My first train set was the 1958 Texas Special freight. I'm also currently living in the middle of MKT territory.
I guess it was just time to rotate to another engine. In time Ibet it will change again maybe a Big Boy or something steam from NYC or PA or B&O who knows personally I would like to see it changed about once a month as to me theres plenty of railroads they could do and plenty of different types of engines they could do also rotating back and forth between a steam type and a diesel type and they even could put a few electric types in there also as my favorite electric is a PRR GG-1 Tuscan 5 stripe

The picture at the top has alternated for me. Yesterday when I read this thread, the746J was still on top. That had to be after the 746J was replaced or this thread would not have existed. Today, the Texas Special is on top.

Why does the picture stay if the web page contains new threads that load? Doesn't it load all of the page when the page is refreshed?
I second rtraincollectors motion of a monthly "roll-over" of the locomotive at the top of the "Forum" page, it would keep things a lot more interesting than they are. Just a personal note, as much as I like the Lionel "J" I've always found it slightly annoying they used a "746" number on it instead of a prototypical "600" through "613". Don't know why it annoyed me as I don't consider myself a "rivet-counter". Anyone know why Lionel did that?

746 was the next catalog number in the series based on a progression of the 8-wheel worm drive steamers.
726-736-746.
Not a hard-fast rule, just a guideline. Other than the 5344, Lionel did not use road numbers before the modern eras.
A higher number usually denotes upgrades or additional features, and not necessarily chronological either.
Think(eg.):
2016-2026-2036
2046-2056(although a downgrade for this one)
671-681
2025-2035

My 681 does have 6200 on the front. i wonder what their thinking was on that.

My guess is that since it was a postwar era model, Lionel tried to stay somewhat prototype orianted while still making toys, and used the item number for the ease of looking through records.

Lionel numbers aren't randomly picked, they have meaning behind them. In 1950, all the numbers were increased by ten, to denote the addition of Magne-traction. The following changes occured:
1110 to 1120
2026 to 2036
2025 to 2035 (675 was dropped from the line)
671 to 681 (2020 was dropped from the line)
2333 to 2343
726 to 736
2046 was added to the line
Then in 1952, due to the war, Magne-traction was dropped from steam locomotives. The numbers then were decreased by ten, reverting back to the pre-1950 numbers, with two including RR (not sure why):
2035 to 2025
736 to 726RR
681 to 671RR
2046 to 2056 (this happened because there was no 1949 number, since it came along with the addition of Magne-traction, and 2036 was already in use)
There may be a few I missed, but you get the point
Another overlooked rule is the 20- and 6- prefixes. There is no difference between a 2020 and a 671 turbine, besides the sets they were used in. A 2020 was only included in 027 sets, and a 671 was only included in O-gauge sets. So 6- denotes use in O-gauge sets, and 20- denotes use in 027 sets.
I think this also proves that I spend too much time reading Lionel catalogs :)

Pre-War the first 700 was the 700EW (5344 Hudson) followed by the 708 (8976 Switcher) yet three years before they had used 752W for the power car of the "City of Portland".(UP Streamliner). 700 numbers appears to have been used for O-72 track and sets.
After WWII the 226 added another set of drivers going from a 2-6-4 to a 2-8-4 and became a 726. Add "Magne-Traction" and it's a 736.
If the 700EW is the best example of "Lionel", then maybe it should be at the top of the page.
