Hi Dave,

I would suspect not too many folks on here have these units.... I have played with a friends loco, its very nice, the whistle and horn are very clear, looks nice, not my cup of tea, but very nice, had it pulling 70 coal cars, so more power then almost anyone would need.

I have had the pleasure of operating one of these under command at the local train store. It is a beautiful model, with beautiful sound. Detail is excellant. The only drawbacks are: still trapped at two chuffs per wheel revolution (my pet peeve), lowest speed is about 5 Scale Miles per hour (which it gets to rather abruptly by modern standards.

My preference for this kind of money would be to have a PS-2 locomotive (personal preference-I do not wi***o get into a TMCC vs. DCS debate).

I have quite of few P-2 engines but the GS-2 that MTH did was just a repainted GS-4, i do prefer DCS but i also have TMCC along with some great Lionel engines. I find little difference between MTH and Lionel now a days. I have heard the sounds in the Lionel GS-2 and they are far superior to that of MTHs P2 GS-2. Plus the Lionel version is far more accurate. It just looks right. As far as the chuffs, yes i do prefer 4 but the 2 does not really bother me.. When i look for a steam engine the following thing must be there, sound, accurate paint and details and a good smoke unit. If you remember the scale daylight cars from K-Line, the detail and looks were great but the color was not right. They were very dissapointing as well as the MTH P2 GS-2 , paint and color was right on, the sounds ok, but the engine was a GS-4 not a GS-2. Lionels is the most correct version i have seen in 3-rail.

Dave,

I have the MTH PS-2 WP GS-2 and I agree, it is, essentially, a GS-4 with one headlight (I still like it though).

I do run both TMCC and DCS and am quite familiar with both. The Lionel GS-2 does sound better, but I still prefer PS-2 (again, a personal preference). I think we just differ here. The chuff thing is just my pet peeve (I watch a lot of Pentrex videos). Running at low speed, it is very obvious (to me). As mentioned in previous posts, the chuff can be corrected in about an hour for a few dollars worth of parts (I have done this to my Lionel 3751 and 779 Berkshire) in about an hour.

Either way, I do agree that the Lionel GS-2 is a beautiful engine.

Rak, I agree the MTH version is very nice and you have to buy what you like. This is why i like this forum, i value your opinions just as you valued mine. If the chuff thing is your pet peeve than you should stick to your guns and buy the one that is right for you. Thank you and keep pushing Lionel for 4 chuffs on their steam engines, i know i will at York.

Thank you David,

I will bring the chuff thing up to the local Lionel rep (he is a very good guy). I think I read on one of the forums that Lionel is working on a 4 to 2 chuff system (four at low speed, two at high speed) to try to satisfy both sets of customers (the two and four chuff fans).

Have fun with your new locomotive (I assume that you will buy it)!
