My much anticipated 1990 Lionel 700e arived today. Upon putting it on the track, it ran perfectly and the whistle and bell were flawless, but no chuff comes out of the tender. I know these early railsounds systems are prone to problems and have heard about the axle on the tender de-magnetizing causing the chuffing to not work. I just dont know enough about it to make the dianosis myself... Any help is appreciated.

If the switch on the bottom is in the ON position and it still doesn't work, you should bring it to a service station were someone will know that locomotive inside and out. I tried fixing a Lionel Scale Turbine with a burned out smoke unit once, but my head spun when I took the shell off. There's just too much that can go wrong with these engines.

Many of these have a problem with the mechanical chuff switch, it's usually located under the smoke unit and is actuated by the arm that runs the smoke unit piston. That switch is either bad or needs adjustment.
