legacy 6-11149, big boy lost some of the sounds

Lost some of the sounds on a big boy. Legacy 6-11149  # 4006.

Tried re-installing the module in the legacy remote and reloading but that did not help.

On the Lionel site there seems to be a code for reprogramming some of these locos

but there was none for this one. It was stated that a spike of some sort could knock out

some of the features. This one lost the chuff, smoke and brake sounds.

Anyone heard of a code to correct this problem?

Have you checked the RailSounds switch on the bottom of the tender?  What position is it in?

you can do a quick reset by pressing "aux1" and zero. if that does not work, you can do a regular reset. look in the manual under "reset to restore features" there is a procedure to follow and a code number for that engine that you have to key in. this should fix your problem. also if you have dual speakers in the tender, check them to see if both are still working.

Tried the reprogram on page 17 twice.

No help.

This one does not have dual speakers.

 In step 7 when pressing Aux 1 the numbers do not come up. Instead there is a picture display of sound increase, etc. 

 I tried pushing the pad where the one would be with no results.

 I also tried the Aux 1 and where the zero should appear with no result.

I have never done a reset with a cab 2. there must be a way to change the keypad to numeric so you can do the reset. the horn should blow after you have done it.

 I will look in the instruction book and see if there is any way to bring the keypad back to numeric after pushing the aux 1 button. The whistle does blow after pushing the keypad when I hit set and the keypad where the number should be.

Thanks, I tried that method using the keypad in that way. The whistle blew when I hit set and then when I hit aux and then one which is the number this loco is supposed to use. No help.

I was wondering if removing the battery from the tender would help before doing the setup. It may be keeping the wrong memory from getting re set.

A question, have you downloaded and installed the Lionel System Utility?  This is a neat utility that allows you to connect a serial cable to your Legacy base and edit your engine data.  I've actually managed to fix a couple of oddities by having this access.

If you lost chuff and smoke, its probably the chuff switch.

This loco has a program/run, smoke, and odyssey switch.

If there is a chuff switch it is hidden. It also lost the brake sounds and the smoke.

 Contacted Lionel support, they suggest sending it in.

 The engine was not shorted out in any way. It was running along and lost these functions.

I notice your proceedure states that the engine is assigned a new engine ID which is 0. Reseting this engine did not go to engine ID 0, it returned to its original engine ID which was 1 in this case.

The Lionel system utility appears to be a programmable black module for your legacy cab 2 remote.

I don't know if that would cure my problem since it appears to be the Loco that has the problem not the cab 2.

The 6-37125 Module does not seem to be currently available. It should be around the end of April.

Unfortunately the electronics in todays modern locos are not bullet proof compared to the mechanical locos of years past. The more complicated the electronics are, the more likely that the loco will eventually find its way to a service center.

 These modules seem to be a backup for whatever settings you have for each individual loco.

I purchased some and they simply backup what you already have. How are these considered service modules.

I had a SD70M2 NS that had flakey sounds only days after buying it. I put up with it doing that until the fan on the smoke unit went out. I didn't really want to ship it to Lionel or drag it into my LHS for a few weeks, so I took the 7 screws out of the bottom and realized that too much smoke fluid or using MTH's much thinner fluid might have leaked thru Lionel's smoke pot and got into the fan unit.

Anyway...My LHS [ New York Central Toys & Train, Mishawaka IN] was nice enough to order the parts for me at no charge and I installed a new smoke unit...now to the part that may help you...

When I took it apart, I found that the radio and sounds modules were barely plugged in. I simply unplugged them, cleaned them with tuner cleaner [rubbing alcohol works too] and plugged them back in. They have worked great since then.

They are service modules for YOUR system, nothing more. In the future you will most likely have to download any system updates to these service modules, then update your system from there. What I would like to know is how are these different from standard USB ports/flashdrives...

 It has been a while but I would like to tell what happened when I sent the loco back to Lionel.

They said it was a burnt wire????

Now I was in electronics service for over 30 years and I rarely ran into burnt wires on low current devices.

Bad connections, yes many many times, especially on printed circuit boards. The way this one acted a bad connection could well have been the trouble.

They were pretty quick getting it back to me as they only had it about a week. I was charged for labor only, 60.00.
