Smoke Unit Wiring On A Lionel 2025
Posted by MickeyDemian on Monday, December 26, 2011 8:30 AM

Hello All:

My grandson noted to me yesterday how my engine was not puffing.  I took it apart and found the 2 wires from the smoke unit broken off of their connection, which I think is on the E unit.  The smoke unit appears to be a new liquid unit and not the old pill one.  Do both wires get soldered to the E unit?  If possible, explain the wire placement of such.  Also, are parts available to rebuild these E units, cycling of such was inconsistent, or would just a clean up with alcohol sufice?

                         Thanks: Michael

Try this link at Olsen's trains.  The manual has a complete wiring diagram that should tell you what you need to know to reconnect the smoke unit:

Alcohol will normally clean up an e-unit, but tuner cleaner is better still.

Traditional smoke generators are connected to the track voltage.  This usually involves a connection to the locomotive frame, which is connected to the outside rails, and one to the terminal on the e-unit that is itself connected to the pickup.

I think you should trace the wiring.  The smoker may be grounded where it is attached to the frame.  The 2nd wire may go to the headlight.
