I purchased a MTH New York Central 2-6-0, 30-1158-1 for 95.00 although it is made in 2000 it was brand new and has Proto 1 sound system which I don't mind at all. My question is did I pay too much for this as I am really new at making locomotive purchases? Any advice would be great good or bad.

Can't stop working on the railroad!
Sounds like a nice price for a nice engine. If it works and you like it, hope you enjoy it.

Good buy, but I would replace the battery which most likely is drained of sufficient operating charge with a BCR.
MTH PS-1 locos that are attempted to run with a dead battery can result in a scrambled operating chip.
I have a number of PS-1 locos, great sounds for their time and very strong pullers. I replaced all the batteries with BCR's at about their 5 year mark.

Great I feel much better but what is a BCR battery?
I will let you know when I get it.
V8Vega I paid $109 including shipping on eBay for the same engine. New they were $130. I love Railking steam. Just bid on the 4-6-0 but diden't win. Dennis San fernando Valley CA.

A BCR is a capaciter that is shaped and designed to hook-up the same as the MTH 9 volt battery in your loco. When you start up your loco with the BCR, let it idle for one minute then you are good to go. Since it is not a battery you won't get a surprise with a dead battery that can harm your PS-1 electronics. They cost about twenty bucks.
In the past year I got an ALCo RS27 and BN FP45 with ProtoSounds ((1)) .
The shell was removed and I took out the battery.
I plugged the batteries into an Energizer rechargable NIckel-Metal Hydride/NiCd Battery Charger for AA, AAA, 9V batteries, then plugged the charger into the wall and waited 16 hours for a full recharge.
That avoided any battery problems.

Sorry I didn't read everything. Where do I buy these and what kind do I get?
J&E Electronics sells the BCR.

I watched a guy at the Jacksonville Home and Patio Show yesterday take the battery out of his PS-1 steamer and run it without a battery on the layout. It did not scramble the board but operated normally. What gives? I am darn sure not going to try that with my stuff.
