No sound on a Chessie 6595 GP-38 with Railsounds

I just purchased a Chessie GP-38 #6595 (from a 6-30131 set) with railsounds on ebay. There was no mention of a problem with the sound when I purchsed it, and it was listed as "almost new."

I am using a lionel 80w transformer and clean track. The engine runs in both directions, with full directional lighting. After moving the sound "On/Off" switch back and forth on the engine and playing with the sound pot (volume control) several times, I got a brief horn sound when I pushed the "Whistle" button when the sound switch was in the "OFF" (yes, OFF) position.

I was unable to replicate the horn sound no matter how often I moved the sound switch or changed the volume control.

This is my first experience with railsounds.  Is there a hidden battery located somewhere?  I removed the cab and moved all of the connecting wires repeatly thinking there might be a loose connection or bad ground, but no amount of movement resulted in any sound.

Anyone have an idea what the problem might be?  I live in the Cincinnati area and turn-around time on repair is 6-8 months in this area, so I like to fix it myself if possible.

Try swapping the power leads on the transformer to the track.

First off, I'd go back to the seller and ask for an adjustment of the price, since it's not "almost new".

Is this just Railsounds and not TMCC?  For conventional mode operation, Railsounds normally has a 9V battery to keep continuity of the sounds for direction changes.

Can you read off what is on the Railsounds module circuit board?  I'd like to know what version of Railsounds you have there.

The engine just has railsounds. it came out in 2010 so it would be a newer version.

Nope - these sets just came out. And typically if everything else is working fine except the horn, then most likely the power leads from the transformer to the track are reversed.

Well, first off, this locomotive has Trainsounds, not Railsounds, there is a difference.

Second, if the leads were reversed, the bell would sound when you press the horn button, I didn't hear that stated.

yep sure is train sounds not railsounds sorry was just replying to what author stated didn't look closely. actually was thinking that as it didn't have tmcc. anyway think he might want to get hold of seller and if no avail ebay
