I am a bit of a newbie and need a little help. I recently purchased a used Williams locomotive from a local train store. It was an old display model. I can't seem to find any information about it .
It is an A-A Western Maryland cab unit set. It has #51923 on both units My question is: What is this locomotive. Is it a F-7, F-3 or an ALCO unit.
I do not have the box, just the foam insert. I have included a few pictures to help
Thank you for your time.
F3. Appears to be Lionel's classic F3 shell (although radiator fans should be a little taller). You can call it an F7 too, since it's so generic.
51 is a correct number for a WESTERN MARYLAND F3, so you can just eliminate the 923 digits (what were they thinking?). Also, the lightning bolt "RADIO EQUIPPED" lettering should be under the cab windows on each side.
This is a Williams F7 made from the old Kusan tooling.

These that are in the photos have the old QSI sound and circuit control boards, you may have the "Leaving on Track Ten" or other announcement that plays when power is applied at a slow rate when starting up. You should have horn and/or bell feature(located in the unpowered unit), if it has both only one sound can be accessed at a time, the bell is accessed at slow speeds and the horn usually when the power is turned up over half way or approx 12 volts.
I have the A-B-A set of Santa Fe F-7 diesels and I removed the circuit board and installed a bridge rectifier in it's place because the unit would not stay locked in forwards only and so I got a slight power increase as well. Also added another set of motors to my unpowered A unit, from an F-7 Pennsy unit, and have a very nice set of F-7's that will haul a lot of passenger cars. FYI; the Pennsy F-7's got the new motor kit from Williams by Bachmann.
