Have an L girder table, need 9" height to underside of platfrom area of 1/2 plywood. Am finding considerable sway in 1 x 3 risers which extend 9" high above bench work?  SUggestions?

I assume your 1 x 3 risers are attached to joists, which in many cases are 1x2.  Here are suggestion to reduce the "sway" or to increase the torsional Resistance of the joint and riser:

1. Glue and screw everything. 

2. Go head and attach the plywood to the riser.  Again glue and screw.

3. If the sway is still un-satisfactory, glue and screw another 1x2  joist to the existing joist or if you have room change to a 1x3 or 1x4 joist.

In triangles there is strength. Assuming the sway is lengthwise rather than crosswise, diagonal braces might do a world of good. 1x2 should be fine.

To be more clear, The 1x3 braces are vertical,, screwed to 1 x 3 joists.. The sway is at 90degrees to the major axis of the joist; obviously this is the direction in which there would be the least resistance to a force applied to the assembly. What I have to do is locate lmost all of these joints in a corner ehere the joist mounts on the L girder, and I scdrew anothe triangle brace into the side of the riser and down into the L Girder. Seeing out that works reduce the posiibility of the swaying of the joists.
