Passenger cars
Posted by jdex on Monday, February 21, 2011 9:39 PM

Have set of MTH Rail King Florida East Coast lighted cars begging for passengers. Are tops removed to get inside, or is bottom somehow removable (which doesn't appear possible)? Have removed two short end screws on the base, but they don't appear to hold anything. Don't want to force something and wind up breaking it.

Also, have Lionel nice running 38609 NYC Mikado Jr. loco. Any suggestions on getting it to smoke to a visible degree?

There is a lot of discussion if you search for it using the search function.  Most of the posts have to do with the Polar Express engine as it has the same smoke system.

I have some, too.  Removing the tops are tricky, but can be done.  Go to mth-railking.com.  Click on 'service'.  Then click on 'instruction manuals'.  Then enter the ID# of the car found on the box.  You should get a pretty good description of how it is done.  There are about 6 screws that have to come out.

Good luck,

Thanks. Did indeed check manual and it  pointed to basically removing just two recessed screws, one at each end of base. They're connected to inner posts that hold roof, evidently.  That done, top ends loosened, but man, there is simply no release in middle. Attempted to slide small flat screwdriver along the loosened opening, but afraid we'll crack the lid with any force. Manual said it may be necessary to twist the car. We twist .....and shout!

Yes, quite nerve-wracking; it seems so easy to bend, crack, or break a new car.  Just take your time.  As I recall, I 'pinched' the body of the car in the middle, near the roof while lifting the roof.  I finally got mine off and 'peeps' loaded.  it makes a nice addition to the cars.  Also tricky snapping the whole thing back together!

Hi, I'm new and this is my first post so I hope I'm doing it right.  I have a set (actually, several sets) of the MTH 027 short passenger cars.  And your right, they just call out for a detailed interior.  But getting the roofs off can be tricky.  After taking the two screws out you have to pry the roof off.  What holds it on are four small plastic taps that lock the roof onto the sides.  I have had some come off fairly easy but one I just couldn't off.  I was afraid I would break the roof.  But after some careful prying, it finally came off.  Besides adding passengers, I have painted the interiors which really looks neat.  Especially the dome cars.  But in the dome cars I had to use kids for passengers because full size adults wouldn't fit!  Take your time and, with a little work, the tops will come off.

At last, success!! Top of 3012 Dome car is off .....intact. Just looking at the plastic tabs and six more pointed inserts certainly tells me the degree of difficulty in removal. The usual solid MTH construction, along with  interior detailing. That is except for the peeps, which we will soon mount. Now, on to my other two cars .....eventually. But, guys, let me express my appreciation for all your help!!!! Great forum

I used adults, but had to chop off part of their legs!   It doesn't show, though.  I remember a recent article in CTT (Nov. 2010) where Hal Maury and Jim Forbes did an outstanding job of decorating a dining car - food on the plates and everything, WOW.

I also detailed my dining cars.  I went to a craft store and found tiny beads in various shapes to use as drinking glasses, dinner plates and other dining cars items.  I also fully detailed the kitchen even though most of the room can't be seen through the windows.  Even though I have a "027" layout, I try to make it as realistic as possible.
