Decal Cracking & Peeling
Posted by NYCentralFan on Friday, January 21, 2011 9:38 PM

Hey, guys.

I just noticed that the "FM" decal on the side of my very old Williams Trainmaster is starting to peel away from the plastic shell, and is very brittle.

Is there anything I can do to either make it flexible again and re-stick the decal down?  Will a modern decal solven like Micro-Sol or similar make it settle back down onto the surface?  What can I do to seal it back down afterward?

If not, then can you recommend someone that can replace the decals with modern ones?

Thanks,

Mario.

PS - Thanks for everything, I'm really learning a lot from you all.

Jeff Kane at The Train Tender has replacement decals listed.  The part number is 2321-15.

Thank you.

I have dealt with Jeff before, many times.

Do you know if these are water slide or peel & stick?

Thanks.

No, I don't know.  But the nose keystone for my 675 is explicitly listed in both a water decal and peel & stick form, so my guess would be that unless it says "paper sticker," it's a water decal.  Best thing would be to email Jeff and ask.

Success!

It was as easy as brushing Micro-Sol over the top.

Since the decal was in one piece and peeling from around the edges, I liberally applied Micro-Sol, twice, letting it dry between applications, and the decal settled back down good as new!

Now, the tiny chip is still missing, but its almost 30 years old, how much more do I want from an engine that only goes foward!

Thanks for your help.
