new transformer for me.
Posted by phillyreading on Monday, January 3, 2011 3:31 PM

I bought a TAC 2001 by Troller Industries at a flee market yesterday and it looks like a kit type transformer. Has two differant voltage settings, 0 to 9 and, 0 to 18 volts. Just checked it with a multimeter and it seems to work, before I put it with my trains I want to know if there is any cautions to be taken with this transformer? Also has accessory outputs as well, and should control 2 trains at one time, and has whistle controls for each train.

From what I can see, it looks like I may use it for my Williams engines.

The transformer works pretty good with one of my Williams engines and B unit that has a True Blast 2 horn unit installed. Only one minor problem and that was having to reverse wires at the track to get the other sound from the T.B. 2 horn unit.

Just wondering what I should try to sell this transformer for? It is a Troller model TAC 2001, 150 watts and has differant voltage taps for accessory hookups. Would $40.00 be low or high for this transformer?

I have a few of these, maybe 4.  The most I've paid is $41.00, shipping included.  So you are in the right ballpark.

The TAC 2001 has some nice features -  a wide range of  accessory outputs including 24v if you need it.  As you have discovered, the switchable voltage range is quite handy for Williams(or K-Line) engines that still have their motors wired in parallel.

And the power output is a better continuous rating than a 175 watt KW.

At that price ($40/) why not keep it around for PW trolleys, or static lighting, or operating accessories, or bias for switch machines/signaling, or lit shelf cars, or... Confused

Which is exactly what mine are for.  Their versatility for accessories and lighting will go a long way in taking the loads off the transformers for the trains.

As I mentioned in my first posting, I bought it at the flea market in a box of stuff for(hold on to your socks!) $20.00. The transformer case has not been opened, as the rivots are still in it from the factory. It was with a bunch of 027 track, five bridges, six 027 switches and a few plastic buildings. I had to junk the 027 straights and curves as they were too rusty, there is always scrap metal, so I can get a few pennies for the rusted out tracks. At the time(10:45 am.) I bought the box of track and other stuff most of the good bargains were gone, guess nobody knew what the value of some of that stuff was.
