Any American Flyer experts out there?
Posted by cbojanower on Thursday, July 1, 2004 1:45 PM
My friend in California did one of those "Brought from the original owner who had it stashed in the attict" types of purchases.

He asked me what I knew about the set, however my AF knowledge is pretty much limited to I know they ran on 2 rails

Can anyone help me out with some sort of info about this train set, its is a great find.. or a so so find?

Any info will be appreciated

Well, your friend's set is very nice and while it is certainly not a rare find, it still does have value and is a good set. It dates from 1954, as that was the only year that American Flyer manufacturered the 287 pacific locomotive. As for the values, here is what the Greenberg guide says:
287 4-6-2: $21 good, $75 excellent (Under all that dust, it's hard to tell just how good it is, but considering that the cars seem to be in excellent condition, I'd say that it would probably rate at at least Very Good condition, so probbly somewhere in between those values.)
941 Frisco gondola car: $22
923 IC refrigerator car: $25
925 Gulf tank car: $23
938 AFL caboose: $13
The boxes raise the value of the cars somewhat. The track and transformer have some value, but not much. I hope this helps you out.
