2046 Won't Run
Posted by traindaddy1 on Monday, September 6, 2010 9:46 AM

Please HELP me trouble shoot.  Through yesterday morning, no problems.  This morning,  my "baby" will not move.  It lights.  It smokes.  Tried it on another separate track line...same result.

Before I hit the "panic" button and run off to the repair shop, I thought I'd ask.  As always, many thanks.

Sounds like it is stuck in nuetral. Have you tried moving the little lever for the direction control? Then again maybe the E unit(the unit that controls the reversing got stuck), at worst the brushes & armature need cleaning. Another thing that could have happened is a wire fell off inside somewhere, so look for a loose wire as well before running to the repair shop.

Traindaddy,

I agree with Lee. Move the lever a few times. I have been there. Embarassing when people are over to see the trains.

LEE and JOHN:  Will do and let you know.  (Got a short errand to run for the "Chief Engineer")  Thanks, so much.

traindaddy1,

My unit's original E-Unit was worn, so I had to have it replaced.

And as, the car sales person said;  "It works like a CHARM!"

2046's are one of Lionel's WORKHORSE Units!!!!!!

WELL...I'm back from the errand.   (Took longer than I had anticipated)

I did move the direction lever a few times but no result other than a clicking sound.  I am about to remove the shell but first I have a fast question.  This engine has more sliding rods than any of my other engines.  Can the shell be removed without interfering with the rods or do they all just drop and have to be re-inserted when I replace the shell?  (My hands are a little unsteady and do get frustrated when things appear to be too complicated.)  Thanks.

POSTSCRIPT (EDIT)........My "Chief Engineer" has advised me that, based on my 'track record' with repairing mechanical things and the fact that this IS one of my favorite engines, I should just take it to "someone who knows what he is doing".  (She is probably correct since it usually costs more for someone to repair my repair)

Again, many thanks for your replies.  I'll post a follow-up.

traindaddy1,

After I retired, I wanted to do repairs at my local hobby shop, but my wife told me to forget about the job, as I would be damaging more, than repairing.

So, I forgot about the job and as a result I pay regular prices, instead of the employee discounts!!!!

Who knows, I would have had to pay for the damaged goods?!!

FOLLOW-UP:   As usual, my hearing is not as good as it used to be!

I went back to the source (you guys) and tried the lever movement once again. (A little more aggressively since the idea of spending "$" really 'bugs' me)

Guess what?     You were correct.  As of now, it works fine.  I'll keep an eye on it and see how things go from now.

AGAIN, MANY THANKS!

Sounds like your "e-unit" needs a good cleaning, maybe the motor workings too.  I'm sure you can search other threads for instructions for that job.  Good luck!
