HELP! Replacing wheels on a Lionel Gondola Car (#1002)

First-time poster here!

I need help replacing the wheels on a Lionel Gondola Car (#1002). The trucks are the old-time "Scout" style. I'm basically afraid to pull the sides of the trucks apart for fear of breaking the truck completely. Is there a method or tool I can use to make this job easier?

Much appreciated! Cool

That's the way to do it.  Grab a wheel with one hand and the adjacent sideframe with the other and pull them apart until the end of the axle comes out.  That should be only about 1/16 inch.  Remember that you only need to get one end of the axle out, which is why you should pull on the wheel and one sideframe instead of both sideframes.
