lurking the toy aisles of Wal-Mart, in search of 1:48 die cast cars and trucks that fit the time period of your layout. Well, let's clarify: 1:43 or 1:50 are close enough!!!!!!!

So now that you've amassed a fleet of trucks and enough cars to fill the parking lot of the Pentagon, where do you put them all on your layout?

Well, you create excuses to display your cars:

A used-car lot

A highway traffic jam

Houses with 2 car garages

Industries that require truck loading/unloading

A drive-in movie

and, of course, an intermodal yard.

DID I leave any out?

Yes, the only thing missing is an 87' open auto carrier that holds 8 cars; something people in HO have but not in toy trains.

"DID I leave any out?"

Yes, don't forget the above ground multi-level parking lot. One 4-level open air garage can hold 50-100 cars!

Well guys,
I think I got enough to fill all your layouts and then some. Please excuse the dust, I took these in a hurry.

This is just part of the collection. And there are some that is not even put out.

Or you can make a model of rush hour on the Long Island Expressway "World's largest parking lot" 72 exits of cars and trucks all stuck in traffic!!!

I stop in any Walmart I have the opportunity to and head for the toy car aisle. For a while now it appears that the 1:43 scale autos and trucks have become a rare commodity at Walmart, K-mart, Toys-R-Us, et al. I haven't found any here in Athens nor one in Fla. on a recent trip. I guess I'll be forced to go mail order.

Roger,

K-Line offers some at low prices; a lot better than Corgi.

2 years ago I got a nice collection of 50s-era tank trucks and semis at about $5 each at Target.

Oh, one other place to show off your car is either at a junk yard or abandoned in a woods or field. Heming's Abandoned Autos Calendars offer great pictures of these derelect gems. Old Hudsons and Edsels and stuff with trees growing out of the engine compartment.

Appears Spankybird ran out of room on his layout. :-)

I'm afraid I don't qualify on this topic Dave. I'm not really into cars, and there won't be many on my layout. The truth is that I probably have way more than I need for what I'm doing, the only problem is they are mostly vintage, and I need modern. Beside, I haven't set foot in a Walmart in YEARS, even though I stopped there just last week while Big Girl ran in. It has been over 6 months since I was in a Target store either. I'm just not much of a consumer I guess.[swg]

Hi Dave,

I think that is a fair statement to make.
QUOTE: Appears Spankybird ran out of room on his layout. :-)

Does it look like I have much more room for more cars on the roads? You know this is a very busy day back in 1920 or so. What a treat!!! A train from the future has come to town.

Do note that the cars on the layout are from 1890 to 1920. Even steam powered turcks.

Die cast vehicles are getting harder to find, I travel some and have noticed that the "big box" stores don't have the selection they used to.
I order alot from diecast direct out of Kentucky. They have a good website thats easy to search. They also have good clearance sales!

Diecast cars? Boring.

Here's what I just uploaded to my Army Men Homepage. When you have stuff like this, who needs diecast kiddie cars? Not me!

Here are more additions to the Army Men Homepage photo galleries.

I have hundreds of die cast cars, and yes, I admit some are 1:36!!! But, I can't tell you what I am doing with them as I want to surprise you all with it later in the year.

BTW, the benchwork shortning has finished and now I am replacing the plywood tops and cutting them to size. My mistake is almost finished. Hurt my back through all of it, so I really am paying the price for my stupidity!

Jack, I have a 1:36 50s-era pickup truck but it looks about right on the layout. I asked my neighbor and he said the scale looks right because the pickup trucks they made back then were very tiny.

I'd like to next get some construction and farm equipment in die-cast but O scale in Wallyworld seems to be in short supply-----at least for the 50s era I'm modeling.

Dave, you mentioned Target, I work part time in one and check the toy car aisle daily, the closest I've seen is probably S gauge. There are plenty of Matchbox size, the HO crowd has no problem.

Hi guys if you have a Tuesday Morning in your area check them out . I have picked up some Franklin Mint cars and 1/43 Matchbox for as little as $5.00 to $7.00. Their stock changes right much , so I try to get by there about every two weeks. Their stuff has to sit on the shelf about a month or so before the prices start to really drop!
Also check the toy section you never know what you might find there as well.

Dear spankybird,
I thought you liked trains [:D].

Here's something to do with the cars: steam-locomotive-scrapping in reverse--scrap automobiles to make steam locomotives [:)].

I saw a working drive-in movie theater in N scale. That might be interesting in O.

But really, instead of clogging your layout with cars, put in a trolley line!!!!

See you around the forums,
Daniel
