Buck, what type of material are you using on your layout instead of plywood?

Foam, almost all foam. After building the wood frame with L-Girder Benchwork, I put the 1"x2" joists at 16" centers except were the two-pieces of foam abutted. Two inches of high-density foam was then placed on top of the joists. The two inches of foam is at the same height as the fascia board around the layout. One inch of open cell foam was then placed on top of the high-density foam.

Notice I am using MTH Railtrak. If you were using a system of track that needs more secure anchoring (Gargraves), I would place a thin (1/8") piece of plywood veneer between the 2" foam and the 1" foam.

To secure the track to the foam, I just pushed a deck screw through the track into the foam. If I needed it more secure, I added a touch of low heat hot glue to the screw before I shoved it through the track.

The trains have been running for about 3 years on the layout without any real track problems. I did have a spot where I had dead track but that was because I didn't put the track together correctly and I fixed it in about 5 minutes. You also must watch your clearances. At one crossover that you cannot see in the photos, there is a thin piece of plywood acting at the bridge.

For an added touch the whole table is on wheels so we can move it away from the wall to work on the backside.

Layout building pics are the best. I love to see layouts in their raw form. Maybe I should actually take some pictures of mine one of these days.

Getting ready to work on project to get the room ready for layout. Think I'll visit the widow lady's train store at noon [she opens up at noon today for the week]. God bless you all.

Thanks Spankybird. Maybe we can get Buckeye up and going and then Jim might stop by. Glad to see Jim's post. Was worried he might have been stormed on there in Texas. Craignor has a good looking layout and those pictues were great. Spankybird, see what you started weeks ago. [:D]

Guess who has detailed benchwork plans? [?] Guess who has copies of detailed benchwork plans? [?] The plans are for a 4' x 16' layout, but it is not any big deal to take out the 8'. Send me an email as to where I need to send them.
