Double stack cars where are you?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 1:26 AM
On our UP railroad here in Tucson and Phoenix, almost every car you see is a double stack car and not much else. My four year old who likes to help with the Lionel layout asked where they were on our layout. Darn good question. I looked on the web and found one made by MTH from 1998/99 and is no longer being produced. I guess companies need to fill a void. Are they listening here? I sure hope so.

hi amtrak jack! those double stack cars where also made by (mdk)k-line,i do own several of those gundersons double stacks),ttux spine cars ,and am real satisfied on their detail, and true 1/4"scale,those cars are extremely nice, k-line also made rail mates or buggies i do own several and when i run my amtrak super chief i connect those rail-mates at the end of that train it looks just like the real one ,also there is a difference among double stacks. 1st some where made to resemble the prototypes like gunderson style. 2nd to resemble thrall style and list goes on ,on .BNSF RULES!!!!!![8D]

Before you check more sources for double stacks, you might want to check your bridge and tunnel clearances! My RailKing double stack (30-7689, 2001) is too tall to pass through an MTH Hellgate bridge or a Lionel lift bridge (PW-style) and Bascule bridge. Because of this problem I haven't been in the market for any more double stacks.

OOOH--thank you guys! I haven't thought about clearances. I don't have my Lionel Hellgate up YET, but will probably in 2005. I also have the double track Atlas O bridge. I wonder how they'd do going through that? What a site it would make if they didn't work, huh? Remember the double-decker bus in the James Bond movie, "Live and Let Die" when Bond drove it through a low tunnel? OUCH!

Jack, I've been buying them up on ebay, lots of them. The MTH premiere are humongus!!! There a bunch of different road names, and I think there are new ones too.

The K-line ones are diecast, and very heavy. They aren't quite as large as the MTH, but they are still big. Lionel also has their maxi stack double cars, these are much smaller, and should be able to go most places on your layout without having to move things for clearance.

I thought you didn't buy non-Lionel products. Be careful, once you start, you may not be able to stop, and you will end up just like me.[;)][:D]

BB, you got me! I couldn't resist that HUGE 40" double track girder bridge. I almost purchased the Atlas O turntable too--So, I guess you're a bad influence on me! HEHEHE! But honestly, today when I bought the bridge, I thought about things and said YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE! To hell with it! And bought the bridge!

I guess I better look on eBay!
