What to do with that forthcoming fed check?
Posted by kehoesj on Saturday, January 19, 2008 7:05 AM
A little survey here... The fed is proposing putting money back into the hands of the taxpayers to avoid the big "R".  How many of you folks are going to spend the money on new or used trains and accessories to help the market out?

I have no idea what i will do with that money.  Is it $800 or is it $1600??  I only heard the amounts but not what for.  assuming its 1600 for a family and 800 for singles.  Well, i gotta get my car state inspected and i think my car needs new motor mounts and new front brakes and rotors, might just blow the money on that.  I have no choice, i need my car to drive to York for the big train show.  if i have some leftover, yes, i will prolly buy an F3. thanks.

I'll belive it when I see it.

This is the U.S. Government, don't spend it until it's in your hand. Will it be a Rebate, a Refund or Taxable Income ?

It will go direct to savings in the bank. We dont need or expect this money this year. It will only bolster our growing reserves. Spend it? HAH! It will go into a interest bearing account and earn money. Too bad that the yield rates are not that great now compared to 6 months ago.

I dont expect or want this money. In fact, we are happy to stick it deep in a vault somewhere against NEXT YEAR's tax season on that money. It will likely turn around and go right back into the money pit of our Treasury Department.

I find it mildly interesting that the Government cannot handle THIER money in a normal Congressional Session and take care of the 14 or so required budgets for each Department such as the Veterans Administration and yet try to rain money down upon the people that will simply soak into the hard drought land within days with little or no impact on overal health.

Ogaugeoverlord, Best wishes. Hopefully that pet does not lose too much during Chemo or whatever it is animals do when subjected to such hard medicines. We are suvivors ourselves.

Whatever vacumn cleaner that actually GETS the dog hair out has to be a good one indeed. And NOT AN ORECK! ugh. I recall my grandparents cannon that had a 1000 horsepower motor inside and frightful suction that gave us dreams of terror as children.

I'll believe when I see it.  If it does happen it would go to savings and then see what happens with the economy.  Personally I would like to see that money used for infrastructure or plow it back into the social security fund for my kids and grandkids.

Pay on student loans and/or add to my train and coin collections--I try to find older coins on the cheap with high levels of silver in them.

Hi,

I don't mean to be a downer, but I've learned many years ago there is no such thing as "free".  IF - and that's a big IF - we get a check from our dear uncle, somewhere down the line our kids or grandkids are going to have to pay it back.

All that being said, any moneys received here will very likely go back into the economy, with some going to the LHS or Ebay.

ENJOY,

I'll believe it when I see it! If I get one it will go into the bank. Why spend it on something? Ask yourself, Do I really need another item for the train? The economy is going to go into the dumps, you count on it! It's already started and won't get better anytime soon. It's a election year, we still have a terrorist cloud hanging over us, the draft will be forthcomming with the next hit! Oil prices and prices of goods and services are going to go through the roof, etc. etc. So why put it back into the economy when you will anyway just to do your day to day living and keeping the ship afloat.

Invest it in welder, drill press and other stuff so I can start making prototypes for my future manufacturing business. If all goes well it will be successfull and I can buy any train I want sometime down the road.

I refuse to lie awake at night worrying about terrorists prowling our streets to hit us as they did on 9-11. Spouse and I dont worry about the draft either. If the call comes, we go. oorah. But there is going to be a hell of alot of trouble getting half of the fighting age people trained.

We build savings at every oppertunity. Our goal is one years necessary expenses ahead of time. That way there is no debt anywhere except food and gas. A dollar here and a dollar there helps alot.

Beats working for creditcard company and thier Nation-killing interest rates. I say remove them from our commerce and limit all borrowing to the Fed rate plus 2%. Greed I say. Not 17% not 25% not 30.. oh no. Waait for the balance principle due and payable on reciept notices to go out as the last of the giants choke on the seawater while drowning.

I can see it now. Visa citi transferred to discover, discover transferred to AmEx, AmEx transferred to Mastercard, Master Card transferred to... as long as they can do this, the music will continue and around the chairs we go at 0% Sometimes I think the major credit card companies make money off the overnight short lending to each other on all of these transfers ON TOP of customer interest rates. Yech.

All of those wonderful 0% offers help us take the credit card debt, bite off chunks and pay em off before the trial period ends. Funny how the mailings dry up and we no longer get junk credit card offers. I bet the scammers are salviating and getting ready to print a bunch of bogus Fed Rebate checks. I can almost hear the printers spooling up now.

Ah yes, then give everything back to Her Majesty when ye finish yah?

Maybe I see an oppertunity for a small camera myself. All I know is the use of what one already has as best as possible.

Read in todays paper that if you make over 100K single or combined for a family you get nothing. Hope thats not true. If we get anything half to me for trains the other half to the bride for scrapbooking.

Depending on who gets their way, it looks like I'll either be up for the full $800 or essentially nothing.

If I end up with the $800, I'll probably go ahead and get Legacy, and then put the rest in savings.

Otherwise, the amount I get will be so insignificant that it wouldn't even buy a decent Postwar car.

LOLOL! I am not going to count on it until I have it in my hand. Otherwise, if and when it comes if at all, it will go into the saving like the rest of our extra money.

But if it does come in...Most to my sons college fund.  Than we will all treat ourselves to a little something and yes, mine will probably be toy train related.
