New layout using homasote
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, January 11, 2004 12:00 AM
I recently posted about using some type of carpet on my new (first) layout. It is 2 4x8's pieces of 1/2" plywood in an L shape. Carpet proved to be relatively expensive compared to 2 sheets of homasote (I just found a supplier in my area).
My question is, or should I say questions: How do I attached the homasote to the plywood?
I assume I should paint the homasote. What type of primer/paint to use? How do I handle the edges, just paint them as well? Examing the homasote at the store, it looks as though you could easily break off a piece from the edge!
Any help/suggestions/comments are greatly appreciated!
TIA, Bob

Homasote is made from recycled newspaper, hence the gray color. You could break it, but it would have a pretty ragged edge. If you need to cut it, and choose a power saw, do it OUTDOORS, as it gets very messy. The alternative is less messy, but takes a lot of effort, and that is a utility knife. Either way, the tool you use will get dull quickly.

Construction adhesive would work to glue it to the plywood, and if you ever wantre to seperate them again, you could without too much damage if you don't use too much.
a few drywall screws would also work, but make sure the sharp tips don't come through the bottom.

Any latex paint will work, and you can paint the edges too, but they may take a few coats. You may just want to put some wood trim around the egde to cover and protect it.

Sorry the carpet didn't work out.
