Old 027 locomotive

I HAVE AN OLD (45 YEARS) Lionel locomotive o27 w/ number 2034 on cab I have had it since I was a kid . Any interesting facts or value on it? I would like to give it too my train nut grandson. Thanks Fauxmaster Phil

Well, this locomotive was manufactured by Lionel in 1952. It would have had a black tender (coal car) to match it. The specific tender is a No. 6066T (the number stamped on the bottom). This was a lower-end Lionel engine. It's value (with a tender) is $26 good, $47 excellent. It sounds like you have just the locomotive. I would reccomend finding some track, transformer and cars to go with it that you could give your grandson so he has a complete train set. If he likes trains, I'm sure he'd absolutely love it. You could even build a layout with your grandson. Model trains can be a very rewarding hobby. You could probably pick up the items needed to build a complete set from ebay or a local hobby store that deals in toy trains in your area (they also might give you some good advice). It is definately a train to be played with, as Sask pointed out, it is not a rare high value collectable. Sounds like it has the makings of a family heirloom though. Have fun, and welcome to the forum.[#welcome]

Yes, highly recommend getting some rolling stock, track, transformer and having fun!!!!. You might want to consider having the engine and tender cleaned, lubed, and serviced (check wiring, etc.). I certainly don't regret having my post-war roster serviced - makes HUGE difference in running enjoyment.

Couldn't agree more with Sask, Big_Boy and Tubine. And couldn't have said it better. But Phil, regardless if the engine you have was worth two or three times more, what it's REALLY worth is what it would mean to your grandson - especially if the two of you work on it together. And that experience is priceless!
You can tell your grandson that he's special - because not many kids today get a train set, nevermind even know what Lionel trains are. When I gave my nephew a train set I told him he was a special kid and probably the only kid in his whole school to have a Lionel train set! Man, the smile on his face when I told him that was worth every cent!

As stated before, get some track and a transformer so you can run it. Routine maintenance(oiling,greasing, and resoldering wires) could also be done with your grandson. Not only would He learn some basic mechanics, but would probably have fun doing it.
